Organized in 1873 as the S.E. Day Hook and Ladder, Tuthill Hose an Fitts Hose Companies, the Moravia Fire Department was formed. Today the 100% volunteer Moravia Volunteer Fire Company of the Moravia Joint Fire District proudly provides fire protection to approximately 4000 permanent residents of the Village of Moravia and the Town of Moravia. Our first due response area is 30 square miles and made up of various type buildings. Though much of our district is rural we also protect two schools, manufacturing facilities, many businesses, a nursing home, senior housing and multi unit apartments. Cayuga Correctional Facility, a medium security New York State prison with 1100 inmates, and Fillmore Glen State Park, which covers over 900 acres, are also in our jurisdiction.
Our services include fire, hazardous materials, basic medical and technical rescue response. The MVFC provides Rapid Intervention Team coverage for Southern Cayuga County and specializes in most types of technical rescue including rope rescue, ice rescue, auto extrication and trench rescue. Most of our members our trained in hazardous materials and decontamination with many that are New York State Hazardous Materials Technicians. Firefighter safety and fire prevention education are vitally important to our organization as well.
